A smart lock is only a good upgrade when it is compatible with your door. Before comparing finishes, app functions or access methods, identify the existing lock type and take accurate measurements. This guide explains the checks that matter most for European-style mortise doors, cylinder systems and deadbolt-style installations.

A smart lock may fit when its published door type, lock body, backset, door thickness, handing, clearance and drilling requirements match your existing door. Do not assume a lock fits because it is sold in your country or because another smart-lock model fitted a similar-looking door.
Start with the lock type
Open the door and look at its edge. A mortise lock has a lock case fitted into a pocket inside the door edge, while a deadbolt installation usually uses circular bores through the door. Many European doors combine a Euro-profile cylinder with a mortise or multipoint mechanism. These systems are not interchangeable, so select a Grisoll model only after comparing it with the model-specific compatibility page.
Measure the essentials
Record your measurements in millimetres. Depending on the product, you may need door thickness, backset, the size of the existing mortise case, faceplate dimensions, distance between handle spindle and cylinder, bore-hole diameter, centre-to-centre spacing, handing and clearance around the hardware.
Check clearance and door movement
A lock can match the core dimensions and still be unsuitable if it hits a frame, handle, security escutcheon, glass panel, chain or other hardware. Inward- and outward-opening doors can have different clearance needs. For example, specifies keyhole-to-frame and keyhole-to-handle clearances based on door opening direction.
